Maine Children's Alliance Priorities for 2023

In the first regular session of the 131st Maine Legislature, MCA is committed to elevating the voices and interests of Maine children and families. Our priorities cross issue areas, involve new legislation, the implementation of recently enacted legislation, and administrative action in key areas of child and family well-being. State investments should prioritize strengthening families with the greatest needs and bolstering the critical services and programs that support them.

This report presents state-level indicators related to the mental well-being of Maine’s children. These indicators are drawn from state and national survey data, and from data from the public systems in Maine that provide mental health, child welfare, education, early childhood and related services for children.

Trends in demographic data represent both challenges and opportunities for Maine to achieve the goal of being a thriving place for all to live, work, and raise a family. With the oldest population in the nation, Maine faces the challenges of caring for older adults and meeting its current and future workforce needs. On the positive side, migration to Maine by people from out-of-state and shifts in racial representation are making Maine more diverse. By recognizing the trends in our population, we can better plan for the programs, services, and systems that will ensure greater long-term social and economic prosperity for all children, families, and our state in general.
